Grades and GPA
Work out your semester GPA and your new cumulative GPA on the 4.0 scale, with every step of the math shown.
How GPA is calculated
Each grade has a point value on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0). Multiply each course’s points by its credits, add those grade points up, and divide by the total credits. Cumulative GPA does the same over every graded course you have taken, so a 4-credit class counts for more than a 1-credit lab.
Common questions
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA covers one term only. Cumulative GPA covers every graded course you have taken, weighted by credits. A 3.6 semester added to a 3.0 over 60 credits only lifts a 15-credit term to a 3.12 cumulative GPA.
Is cumulative GPA weighted or unweighted?
It can be either; it depends on whether your school adds extra points for honors, AP or IB classes. This calculator gives an unweighted cumulative GPA on the 4.0 scale, where an A is 4.0 in every class.
